Inspired by the pūrākau of Mataora, this artwork honours the origins of tā moko and the journey of transformation, humility, and redemption. Mataora reminds us that true identity is earned through our actions, our character, and our connection to whakapapa. This piece celebrates the sacred traditions of Te Ao Māori and the enduring strength found in growth, love, and self-discovery.
Disclaimer: This artwork was originally titled "Ngā Karu O Ngā Tūpuna." Over time, however, I found myself naturally referring to it as "Mataora." As I reflected more deeply on the meaning and story behind the piece, the name Mataora felt like a more authentic representation of its kaupapa and the journey it embodies. While the artwork itself remains the same, its title has been updated to better reflect the inspiration and narrative behind it.
